hey everyone

is it possible to get a track to sound ambient and like its coming from a distant room using adobe premiere, after effects, sound forge or some other tool I probably have or can get for free?

Hey there.

The audio filters in premiere should do that no problem. Sound Forge most certainly will. Go read the manuals.

Or just play the cd in another room and record the sound.

You can always use a track equalizer from your software of choice. To makes thinks easy, lets pretend that your software has a 4 band EQ, with band 1 being the low frequencies, and 4 being the high frequencies. Drop bands 1, 3 and 4 all the way down, and band 2 all the way up. Start sliding band 2 down and band 3 up as desired until you find the propper mix for the clip. I've done stuff like this for shots where a character is eaves-dropping through a wall, or when someone is shouting through a glass wall of an enclosed chamber.
